trapped In a small patch of tropical forest a squirrel sized golden lion tamarin stops on a high up branch and listens The young female picks out another tamarin's long call These shrill tweets can be heard over a mile 2 kilometers away It's the way a tamarin signals I'm here Is anybody there The young female is searching for a mate with whom she can start a family group So she goes to investigate This female tamarin is eighteen months old She is ready to mate and have babies
She finds two family groups together The youngsters are playing while the mothers nurse their babies The males chatter and chase one another Their noises help to claim their family's home territory the part of the forest where they find food and safe sleeping places As the young female moves closer the families stop get quiet and stare Sometimes a young adult joins a neighbor's family group
