Ultimate Predators: On the Hunt with Great White Sharks
THE ANIMAL WORLD IS FULL OF PREDATORS Predators are the hunters who find catch and eat other animals their prey in order to survive Every environment has its chain of hunters The smaller slower less able predators become part of the prey for the bigger faster more cunning hunters But everywhere there are just a few kinds of predators at the top of the food chain These are the top predators In the oceans of the world especially cooler ocean waters along coastlines one of those top predators is the great white shark
Why are great white sharks top predators For one thing they are big enough to hunt and kill their habitat's large prey such as whales or other large sharks But they most often eat squid fish and seals Female great white sharks grow to be longer than males and may be as much as 20 feet 6 m long that's about half the length of an average sized school bus But even shorter males may be 13 to 15 feet 3.9 to 4.5 m long Great white sharks usually weigh between 1,500 and 4,000 pounds 680 and 1,814 kg That includes plenty of muscle power to make this hunter a top predator
WOW The largest great white on record was 21 feet 6.4 m long and was estimated to weigh 7,100 pounds 3,221 kg M
